Solomon Systech Launches World’s First PMOLED TDDI IC

Revolutionizes the PMOLED Technology

Hong Kong, 11 December 2018 – Solomon Systech Limited (“Solomon Systech”) is pleased to launch the “World’s First” Touch and Display Driver Integration (TDDI) IC, SSD7317, which integrates touch and display microelectronics into a single chip for use on PMOLED (Passive Matrix OLED) panels, targeting applications including wearables, smart home appliances and smart healthcare devices.

SSD7317 Revolutionizes the PMOLED Technology

The SSD7317 PMOLED TDDI IC has transformed the traditional PMOLED display panel into the “touch + display” panel. This breakthrough best caters to the rising needs of end-users for excellent display quality and touch performance; thinner and lighter form factor design; and also module manufacturers’ quest for lower cost and reduced manufacturing time and process.

Substantial Reduction in Total Module Costs and Thickness

The SSD7317 adopts a proprietary time multiplexing approach for display driving and in-cell touch detection, thereby enables touch detection on traditional PMOLED display module with no modifications needed on the existing display module structure. Unlike traditional out-cell touch solutions (with separate display and touch IC) which need a dedicated ITO layer for touch sensor, the SSD7317 eliminates a touch ITO layer and a PET substrate layer, as well as a bottom Optically Clear Adhesive (OCA), and hence substantially reduces the total module cost and also thickness, which enables lighter and thinner form factor design.

Greatly Enhanced Display Quality and Touch Performance

The thinner stack-up of the PMOLED TDDI module incorporating SSD7317 enhances light transmittance and further improves the display quality of the panel, which is already characterized by high brightness, high contrast ratio and wide viewing angle. The SSD7317 supports up to 4 key zones for touch detection, gesture identification (single tap, double tap, long tap and slide gestures (up/down and left/right)), glove operation (up to 0.2mm thick) and wet-finger operation. It also enables no false touch operating with water spray and 2cc water drop.

Key Competitive Advantages

In short, compared with traditional out-cell touch approach, the key competitive advantages of SSD7317’s in-cell touch technology includes:

  • Enables better display quality given higher light transmittance
  • Enhances touch performance with the proprietary time multiplexing approach reducing display and touch crosstalk
  • Lowers the total module costs by reducing the total number of components
  • Improves yield rate of final product assembly
  • Shortens development cycle
  • Enables ultra-slim form factor
  • With 7 patents filed globally

Strong Market Potential

The technology of PMOLED has been widely adopted in smart devices including wearables, smart home appliances and smart healthcare devices, which exhibit strong growth potential. The launch of the PMOLED TDDI IC is expected to further enhance the user experience of these smart devices, and may also further extend the applications of PMOLED technology in the IoT era.

“Solomon Systech Limited has been highly committed to innovation. We believe that this ground-breaking innovation has set an important milestone in the PMOLED industry worldwide. As a pioneer and a market leader of PMOLED display driver ICs, we are ready to leverage this “World’s First” PMOLED TDDI IC to cater to surging market needs and push for further growth,” said Raymond Wang, Corporate Vice President and Head of Advanced Display Business Unit, Solomon Systech Limited.
